11/30/2011 Ex. Dir. Update: Public Retirement Committee's Jonesboro Meeting Dec. 12-13 Print

The Public Retirement Committee's regional meeting is in Jonesboro on December 12 and 13. The main meeting for public questions and comment is on Monday, December 12th at 4:30 at Arkansas State University (ASU) Fowler Center- Riceland Hall. The Public Retirement Committee is holding regional meetings to allow the public, members of retirement systems, and public employers to provide input on retirement issues and potential proposals that may be considered by the General Assembly. I have attached more information about the schedule, issues, and the past two meetings to this email. The regional meetings in Rogers and Arkadelphia were well attended by ATRS members. ATRS members are encouraged to attend to watch the General Assembly in action, ask questions, and provide comments. A status update on each retirement system is provided in the meeting. The Committee also seeks input on potential benefits changes. Several potential changes in benefit structure have been discussed in the media and in other forums. Some potential proposals that have been discussed include:

Elimination/shortening of T-DROP

Retirees' Benefits/Active Members' Retirement Account Information - Published and Available for any Citizen to View

Prohibiting Retirees from Returning to Work or Eliminating Monthly Retirement Benefits during Reemployment

Reduction in the ATRS COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment)

Your opinion and input are important to members of the General Assembly. Input from ATRS members and the general public before the General Assembly's regular session may impact potential legislation. The Public Retirement Committee is holding regional meetings across Arkansas to make it easier for ATRS members and the public to attend and speak at legislative meetings on retirement issues. The website for the Arkansas General Assembly is http://www.arkleg.state.ar.us/assembly/2011/2011R/Pages/Home.aspx. You can use that legislative website to learn more about the legislative process or obtain contact information for members of the General Assembly. ATRS staff members will be at all of the regional meetings. If you attend a regional meeting, please feel free to introduce yourself to the ATRS staff in attendance. We look forward to meeting with you there.
